Obituary of Kathleen Lyons
Kathleen Margaret (Mundee) Lyons, 71, of Portsmouth, RI, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on September 17, 2017. She lived with multiple sclerosis for over forty years. Kathy was born in Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada on June 28, 1946. She grew up in Red Head, Saint John, New Brunswick, where she graduated from Simonds Regional High School. Following a calling to care for others, she, like her mother before her, completed her nursing degree at Saint John General Hospital School of Nursing. She began her career at Grace Maternity Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia and later graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at Salve Regina University in Newport, RI. For twenty years, she worked as a registered nurse at Newport Hospital in the intensive care unit.
Kathy married John Joseph (Jack) Lyons, Jr. of Newport, RI in 1970, and together they shared many adventures, travelling all over the European continent and spending summers at their cottage in Grand Manan, New Brunswick. They often escaped New England winters by visiting South Carolina, St. Augustine, FL, and the Florida keys. She was a loving mother to twin daughters and a devoted wife. She led a full life, enjoying her quality time with family and friends and quiet mornings on the porch in Grand Manan with the sights and sounds of the Bay of Fundy at their doorstep. An avid reader, she was a charter member of the neighborhood book club, Babes in Bookland. Among the things she loved are finding a good deal, holding babies, coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts, outsmarting the contestants on Jeopardy, baking, and scented candles.
Predeceased by her parents, Donald and Kathleen (O’Connor) Mundee, she is survived by her husband and her daughters Emily Lyons of Middletown, RI and Jane Lyons and her wife Andrea Bunker of Burlington, MA. She is also survived by her niece Kimberly Lyons of Warwick, RI, her nephew John (Jay) Lyons of Providence, RI, and extended family in Toronto, Ontario and Sussex, New Brunswick. Special gratitude is extended to Elaine Koch, Athena Eliopoulos, Mida Chase, and the Hospice team from VNS of Newport and Bristol Counties for the exceptional care they have provided.
