Obituary of Raymond Pratt
Raymond Arthur “Ray” Pratt, 97, of Middletown, RI passed away on Friday, December 8, 2017 at the John Clarke Retirement and Nursing Center. Ray was born in Waterbury, Ct. to Alma Sophie Pelletier Pratt and Arthur Agitore “Archie” Pratt on June 5, 1920. He started his career with the Southern New England Telephone Company as a lineman in 1940. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 serving his country during WW2. He served in the Seabees from 1942-1946 in the 41st Construction Battalion and 103rd, stationed in Guam and Kodiak Island, Alaska. After his Honorable Discharge with a Good Conduct Medal, he resumed working for the Southern New England Telephone Company as a Cable Splicing Foreman, until his retirement in 1981.
Ray became a member of the Knights of Columbus Sheridan Council No. 24 in Waterbury Ct. in 1960 and became a Second and Third Degree Knight in 1960. He became a Fourth Degree Knight in 1968. He became an Honorary Life member with the Sheridan Council No. 24 in 1990. He became an Honorary Life member with the Bishop O’Reilly Assembly 101 in Waterbury in 1994. He had been a member of the order for 58 years.
Ray enjoyed traveling cross country with his wife Jo and their children, always camping, as he loved the outdoors. They were both avid dancers. They spent 20 winters in Lady Lake, Florida. He was a parishioner of St. Anne’s church in Waterbury all of his life, until he and Jo moved to RI. in 2008. He and Jo celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary June 29, 2016, surrounded by their family. Ray was active in bowling at Perillo’s and at the Knights of Columbus in Waterbury. Also, he regularly golfed in Ct. and Fl. He won many local tournaments in both golf and bowling over the years.
Ray is survived by his daughter Lorraine Tasso and husband Charles Tasso of Newport, his son David Pratt and wife Teri of Wolcott, Ct., his son Richard Pratt and partner Denise Fay of Litchfield, Ct. and New Smyrna Beach, Fl. He has 3 grandsons, Colin Pratt and wife Erika of New Hartford, Ct., Tyler Pratt of Torrington, Ct., and Spencer Tasso of Newport. He has 2 great-granddaughters, Olivia and Aila Pratt of New Hartford, Ct. He also has a niece, great nieces and a nephew, and great-great nieces and a nephew.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Josephine Jenny “Jo” (Mo) Pratt, his sister Bertha Pratt Houde LaPerriere, his nephew Robert Houde, and his great grandson Gabriel Pratt.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Ray and Jo, will be held on Friday, December 29, 2017 at St Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Rd, Middletown, RI., at 11:00 am. Their burial will be immediately following at the Veteran’s Cemetery, Exeter, RI. Viewing hours are respectfully omitted.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Resident Activity Fund for the John Clarke Retirement and Nursing Center, 600 Valley Rd. Middletown, RI. 02842. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the many dedicated staff and wonderful friends Ray and Jo had at John Clarke. They also wish to extend their appreciation and thanks to Hope Hospice and Palliative Care. Carolyn Bertsch RN, Allison Nugent and Sue Eldridge were extraordinary in their kindness, compassion and professional care.
