Obituary of Stephen Hibbard
Stephen Joseph Hibbard, 73, of Newport, RI, died peacefully Saturday, January 27, 2018, at the Grand Islander after a long battle with cancer.
Born December 31, 1944 in Miami, FL, and raised in the Oak Square neighborhood of Boston, Stephen was the son of the late John Vincent Hibbard, Sr., of Alexandria Bay, NY, and the late Mary Elizabeth Rafferty Hibbard of Brookline, MA.
Proudly serving in the Marines, he was stationed in Okinawa and at Quantico, before moving to Newport and building his life in the City by the Sea with then longtime partner, the late Kathleen L. Angier.
A bon vivant with a zest for life, Stephen travelled both in his younger years as a commercial fisherman and charter crew member, and more recently with his beloved daughter, Selene M. Angier of Cambridge, MA. With a love of the stars, the sea, and ancient history, his wanderlust brought him to nearly every Caribbean island, the Mayan ruins of Mexico, Greece, Guatemala, Italy, and Spain.
Music, sailing, golf, “the ponies,” good food, and the Red Sox were among his many passions. He was a generous and dedicated friend, and had many in return, including his second family at the Pelham.
He is survived by his loving sister Lila M. (Hibbard) Foye of Weymouth, MA, nephews W. Owen Foye and Kenneth G. Siddons, girlfriend Christine Powell, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was the brother of the late John V. Hibbard, Jr., and the late Elaine Richards.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School by visiting www.stjo.org or to Seamen’s Church Institute, 18 Market Square, Newport, RI 02840.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring at One Pelham East. Yeah, boy!
