Michael R. Hunter

Michael R. Hunter, 86, of Newport, died March 4, 2019, at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence, RI after a short illness. He was the husband of Helen B. Hunter. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Born in the 5th Ward on Dec. 4, 1932, he was the youngest son of the late Augustin and Magdalena Forster Jagschitz.  He was the brother of the late Ernest C. Hunter, Louis Jagschitz, Augustin Hunter and John Jagschitz.

Mike was a graduate of De La Salle Academy, and earned a bachelor degree from URI. Mike honorably served on active duty in the United States Navy. His civilian career of 27-years was spent at the Naval Education and Training Center in Newport. Mike was instrumental in bringing Pop Warner football to Newport serving as president and coach.  He had also been a Little League baseball coach.  Mike had been an Auxiliary Police Officer, had served on the Newport Planning Board, had been a volunteer with the American Red Cross, and was a faithful blood donor. He also had volunteered at the Senior Center providing tax services for the elderly.  Mike was a long-standing member of St. Augustin’s Church; he was a Eucharist Minister and had taught Catechism. Mike had enjoyed scuba diving, spear fishing, ocean kayaking and most recently was an avid court tennis player at the National Tennis Club.

Mike leaves his wife Helen Hunter, a daughter Barbara Lieberman of Portsmouth, and 3 sons; Michael S. Hunter of Arizona, Patrick S. Hunter of W. Warwick, James B. Hunter of Connecticut; five grandchildren; 3 great grand-children; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Friday March 8, 2019 from 4 to 6 pm at O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 10 am at St. Augustin’s Church, at the corner of Carroll Ave. & Harrison Ave., Newport.  Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery, 465 Brown's Lane, Middletown.
