Mary Eileen Sullivan, 90, of 25 Dean Ave., Newport, passed away peacefully at home, on Sunday, September 23, 2007, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Newport on April 7, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Daniel J. and Mary (Curran) Sullivan. Eileen was a graduate of St. Mary's Grammar School and the former St. Joseph's High School, Class of 1935. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary's Church. In the 1940's, she worked in the Bookkeeping Department of the J.T. O'Connell Company, and also worked in the Disbursing Department of the Naval Torpedo Station. From 1947 until her retirement in 1973, she was an Accounting Manager in the Naval Supply Center of Newport. Eileen was a volunteer at the St. Clare Home, and also a Eucharistic Minister to the sick in St. Mary's Parish. For a few years she also served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She was known as a gourmet cook, and loved making her Irish sweaters. She is survived by her three sisters, Cecelia M. Sullivan, Theodora S. Towle and Theresa C. Sullivan; nieces and nephews, Daniel J. Sullivan and his wife Susan, Maureen S. Wood and her husband Michael, all of Newport, Jeremiah D. Sullivan and his wife Lisa of Portsmouth, and M. Eileen Sullivan of Middletown; grandnieces Lisa Sullivan, Kelly Sullivan, Meghan Sullivan, Erin Sullivan, and Casey Sullivan; grandnephews Michael J. Wood, Ryan T. Wood, and Patrick S. Wood; great grand-niece Ally, great grand-nephews Zach and Wes, and several cousins. She was the sister of the late Daniel Joseph Sullivan and former Newport Police Chief Jeremiah D. "Denny" Sullivan. Eileen was instrumental in holding together the Sullivan family. After her mother's death, Eileen, only eight years old, became head of household and helped to raise her five siblings, the youngest being only 10 days old. Because of this, she will be remembered as the Matriarch of the Sullivan Clan, and as a loving sister, aunt and friend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at 10:00am, at St. Mary's Church, Spring St., Newport. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown. Visiting hours will begin at 8:30am, on September 25, in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home.
