James W. Magnan, 81, formerly of Middletown, RI., died Monday, September 24, 2007, at the Rhode Island Veteran's Home in Bristol. Born in Providence on July 11, 1926, he was the son of the late Henry and Marion (Wilson) Magnan. He was the husband of the late Pauline T. (Goulet) Magnan. In 1947, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy and served in World War II. He was a graduate of the Bryant School of Business. He was a civil service accountant with the United States Government for over 30 years, retiring in 1979. After his retirement he had worked for the Newport Reading Room and the Newport Tennis Hall of Fame. He coached both the Little League and the Babe Ruth League in the 1960's and 70's. Jim was an avid fisherman. Along with his wife, he was a parishioner of St. Lucy's Church in Middletown, and a former parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Newport. Jim is survived by his children, Steven J. Magnan and his wife Dana of Novi, MI., Thomas H. Magnan and his wife Meg of Decatur, IN, James W. Magnan, Jr. and his wife Mary Beth of Middletown, RI, Pauline Ford and her husband Peter of Middletown, and William P. Magnan of Jupiter, FL.; his grandchildren, Kip Magnan, Kyle Magnan, Peter Ford, William Ford, Samuel Magnan, Hannah Magnan, and Josie Weeks; and his sister, Marion Dean of Winter Haven, FL. Jim was the grandfather of the late Jamie Michelle Magnan, and brother of the late Colin Magnan and Harry Magnan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 28, 2007, at 9:00 am, at St. Lucy's Church, 909 W. Main Rd., Middletown. Burial with military honors at St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, September 27, from 4:00-7:00 pm in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home.
