Patrick Leo Chilabato, 79, a long time resident of Newport, died on October 26, 2007 after a long illness. He most recently had been a resident of the Veteran's Home in Bristol, RI but also had residences in Portsmouth, RI and Deerfield Beach, Fla. Born in Boston, MA, he was the son of the late Cusmos Lopes and Rosetta Marie Chilabato. Upon completion of school, he was employed by the Merchant Marines and later enlisted in the United States Navy where he served aboard the USS Charles R. Ware. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. While in Port Lyautey, French Morocco, he met his future wife, Sarah Cohen, who was working for the American Red Cross. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this December. Upon retiring from the navy he settled in Newport, RI, and opened Pat's Diner, a popular local restaurant that he and his wife owned and operated for over 15 years. He also worked as a chef for many local restaurants including La Forge Casino, the Wharf Tavern and Shamrock Cliff. He was a member of the VFW and was an active volunteer for the Festa Italiana. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed playing cards with family and friends He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sarah (Cohen) Chilabato of Portsmouth, RI and Deerfield Beach, FL., 4 children and their spouses, Yvette Smith of West Palm Beach, FL, Patrick Oscar and Ellen Chilabato of Portsmouth, Donna and Richard Sisson of Portsmouth, and Peter and Angie Chilabato of Portsmouth. He leaves 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VNA of Newport County, P.O. Box 690, Portsmouth, RI., 02871. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 30, 2007, at 10:00 am, at St. Barnaba's Church, Portsmouth. Burial at Newport Memorial Park, Middletown. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, October 29, from 4:00-7:00pm in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home.
