James J. "Jim" Lavin, 93, of Warren, RI, formerly of Wakefield and Newport, died Thursday, March 13, 2008, at home with his family. He was the husband of the late Edith M. (Nelson) Lavin. Born in Providence on March 8, 1915, he was the son of the late John B. and Mary (Kelli) Lavin. Mr. Lavin was a Vocational Instructor for over 33 years, teaching at both Rogers High School and Thompson Jr. High School in Newport. He was an avid golfer and former member of Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club in Middletown. During his retirement years, Jim loved ballroom dancing and won many awards for his dancing skills and natty attire. Jim was on the original committee that brought Little League Baseball to Aquidneck Island and served as President during its early years. He is survived by his sons William J. Lavin of Vero Beach, FL, and Richard M. "Rick" Lavin of Warren; a daughter, Mary-Lou Pearson and her husband James of Fort Walton Beach, FL; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late John. J. Lavin and Robert F. Lavin. A Graveside Service will take place on Monday, March 17, 2008, at 1:00pm, at Middletown Cemetery, Wyatt Rd, Middletown. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, March 16, from 6:00-8:00pm in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's memory to a charity of ones own choice.
