Obituary of Mary Lavoie
Mary Lavoie, 79, of Newport, RI passed away Friday, November 10, 2017 at home surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Joseph Lavoie. Mary spent her life dedicated to her family, committing her time to her home and her husband in her elder years. She met her husband, Joe, shortly after his arrival in Newport from the Korean War, and they married on April 28th, 1956.
Mary was an active parishioner of Saint Mary’s church in Newport, RI. She enjoyed a quiet life, but was always kept up on community news and developments. A Newport resident her entire life, she had a deep interest in what was going on in town and with her family, and sharing that news over an afternoon phone call.
Although a homemaker most of her life, she spent time in the 70’s and 80’s working as the secretary at Gold’s auto, which her husband managed for over 35 years. Mary was also an avid bowler around the same time, winning many tournaments and trophies along the way. She enjoyed gardening while physically able, spending time in her yard growing herbs and vegetables. She had a deep love for animals as well, more specifically Dachshunds, which she owned for the majority of her life.
Mary is survived by her daughter and son in law, Elizabeth and Charles Laurin of Middletown, her brother, Henry Cassese, her grandsons, Adam Laurin and Joseph Laurin of Middletown, her great grandchildren, Shea, Finnegan, Lilly, Mary and Dominic, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 from 10 – 11 am in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport. A graveside committal service will follow in Newport Memorial Park, 123 Howland Avenue, Middletown at 11:45 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the RISPCA, 186 Amaral Street, Riverside, RI 02915.
