Obituary of Elsie Lawless
Elsie E. Lawless, 90 of Newport RI passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at The Royale Nursing Center, surrounded by her loving family, friends and Angels. She is now reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband James A. Lawless.
Born in Newport on February 28, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Everett and Catherine (Nyhan) Marvelle. She attended Rogers High School.
She worked at the cosmetic counter at Liggett’s Drug store before becoming a loving wife and homemaker for many years. After her family had grown she worked for the Preservation Society of Newport County at the Elms Gift shop, where she was known for her sales of music. Her other favorite pass time was writing in her daily journal which she has done for the last 50 years.
She was a faithful member and longtime parishioner of St. Augustin’s Church in Newport, was an active member of the choir since 1973, involved with the CYO Search Movement, and earned the “Spirit of Alive” award for her enthusiastic promotion of the Search program. Elsie also volunteered for the Newport County Catholic Regional School, was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award in 1980 long after her children had left the school and served as an officer of the Mothers Guild, a member of the Red Hat Society and the Edward King Senior Center.
Elsie is survived by her 4 children, David Richard Lawless and his wife Filomena of Tiverton RI, Claire B. Donahoe and her husband Sean of Burke, VA, Francis W. Lawless and his wife Diane of Bristol, RI and Katie Wilkinson and her husband Donald of Portsmouth RI, grandchildren, Patrick Donahoe, Angela Lawless, James A. Lawless, Jason Donahoe, Kristin Lawless, Maxwell Lawless and Katelynn Lawless, and many nieces and nephews which she cherished.
Her siblings, Everett Marvelle, Ward Marvelle, Claire Betty Marvelle, Lillian Mahoney, James Marvelle, Paul Marvelle, and Daniel Marvelle, preceded her in death.

Visiting Hours will be on FRIDAY, January 5, 2018 from 4-7 pm at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI.
Her funeral service will be held on SATURDAY, January 6, 2018 at 11 am at St. Augustin’s Church, Carroll Avenue, Newport. Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery Chapel, 465 Brown’s Lane, Middletown.
