Lorraine E. McEnness, 90 of Newport passed away Thursday, January 25, 2018 at St. Clare-Newport.

MOST BELOVED wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Lorraine was born in Newport in 1927 to August Armbrecht and Anna Kingstree Armbrecht. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Joseph F. McEnness, children Pamela McEnness Giannini, Joseph F. McEnness Jr., grandchildren Kyera Giannini, Nicole Giannini, Joseph McEnness III and Colleen McEnness.

She was predeceased by her four sisters, Mary Armbrecht, Isabelle Blythe, Anne Nunes and Barbara Manning.

Lorraine attended the Hazard Memorial Elementary School (St. Joseph’s), Rogers High School, and Milgrim Secretarial School. She was a secretary at the Newport Naval Base as well as the Carpenter’s Local Union. After raising her family, Lorraine opened a popular millinery shop just off Bellevue Avenue and became very active in the Business Women’s Association and the United Nations Observance Committee, serving for several years as Secretary.

She was an avid reader and wonderful cook, and also had a love of travel, languages, the arts and entertaining. She gave her extended family and friends wonderful memories with decades of her warm and fun Christmas gatherings, her favorite holiday.

Lorraine was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Newport and a long-time member and supporter of the Newport Art Association and Museum, Hazard’s Beach, and the Friends of the Newport Public Library. In addition to her love of the ocean and warm days with her children and grandchildren on Hazard’s Beach, she enjoyed collecting Lladro porcelain and Steinbach nutcrackers.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the St. Clare’s Assisted Living Nursing Staff for their wonderful skill and extraordinary care and kindness for Lorraine in her final months.
