Obituary of Janice Leys

Janice Leys, 86, of Middletown, RI, passed away after a short-term illness Saturday, February 10, 2018.

A resident of Bradenton, FL and Middletown, RI, Janice was born in New Bedford, MA on November 30, 1931 to Merrill Allen and Lila Slocum.

She graduated from New Bedford High School and the Truesdale Clinic School of Nursing. She began her extensive career in acute care Nursing at the Newport Hospital shortly after graduation and also cared for students in the health clinic at St. Georges School.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Donald McKenzie Leys and her brother, Walter Allen Slocum.

Donald McKenzie Leys passed away after a long-term illness Wednesday, October 29, 2014.

Donald was a graduate of Rogers High School and the University of Rhode Island. He served in the United States Navy before returning to Newport and his career as Vice President / Treasurer of Leys Century Store. He served on the Board of Directors for Newport County Mental Health. He was a former Commodore and lifetime member of the Newport Yacht Club. He also was a member of the Middletown Lions Club.

Together, Jan and Don traveled the world with family and friends and they especially enjoyed sailing and skiing. Jan was an avid chef who also enjoyed photography and reading. Don enjoyed the results of Jan’s culinary excellence and also spent time quahogging and fishing when traveling to Block Island or Cuttyhunk. Additionally, he enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden or working on his numerable projects when he was at home. 

After Don’s death following their 60th wedding anniversary, Jan enjoyed spending time reconnecting with friends after returning to Middletown. She was happy to be home where she could experience the beautiful Fall foliage and also took paws to care for her cats, Trey and Callie.

They are survived by their son, Scott Leys of St. Petersburg, FL and their daughter, Susan Leys of Manchester, NH.

Together, Jan and Don’s love and compassion, dedication to family, friends, and service, and above all their unbounded humor and spirit, will never be forgotten.

A graveside burial service for both Janice and Donald Leys will be held at St. Mary’s Churchyard, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth, on Friday, May 11, 2018 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception at the Newport Yacht Club to honor and celebrate their lives.
