Obituary of Maureen Windley
Maureen Shea Windley, 82, of Harrison Ave, Newport died Sunday, May 27, 2018 at the Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Newport, RI on April 18, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Mary (Tiernan) Shea. She lived her whole life in the Fifth Ward.
Maureen was a 1949 graduate of St. Augustin’s School and a 1953 graduate of St. Catherine Academy.
Maureen was a lifelong parishioner of St. Augustin’s Church, where she donated a great deal of her time helping count money since 1949. She served as a Eucharistic Minister and was named a Trustee in 2002. She enjoyed typing up schedules and budgets on her computer for the church. Her faith was so important to her right up to the end.
Maureen was employed by the Newport Daily News as a Linotype, Perforator and Computer operator for 36 years before retiring in 1996. She then worked at the Gateway Center where she liked meeting people who came to visit her beautiful home town. In March 2001 she began working for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny as the Provincial’s secretary. She was secretary to Sister Marie Cooper and Sister Joan Van der Zyden before retiring in March 2001.
Maureen is survived by her brother, John (Jack) Shea Jr. and his wife Audrey, of Trumbull, CT. and her nieces and nephews Colleen Chase Walsh, Mary Chase Peirson, John L. Chase, Thomas J. Chase, Katrina Shea Lane, Andrew Shea, Timothy Shea, Daniel Shea and several grandnieces and nephews. She was the sister to the late Kathleen “Kay” Chase (her twin) and her late brother-in-law Alden Chase.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 4-6 pm at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018 with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 am in St. Augustin’s Church, corner of Carroll and Harrison Aves., Newport. Burial will be at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Lane, Middletown.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maureen’s memory to St. Augustin’s Church Building Fund, 2 Eastnor Rd., Newport, RI 02840 or to the Memory Unit at the Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 70 Harrison Ave., Newport, RI 02840.
