Obituary of Glennice Newhouse
Glennice Faye Cate Newhouse, of Newport, RI, passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 with her family by her side. She was the wife of the late Richard Newhouse Sr.
Born November 28, 1929 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Elvira (Vida) Walker Cate and John Lewis Cate. Glennice was one of nine children and grew up in Athens, Tennessee.
Glennice loved to travel as a young woman. Her road trips included as close as “Look Out Mountain” in Chattanooga to going to favorite places like Michigan, Florida and Texas. Later her travels consisted of several cross country road trips from California to Florida with her five children and sometimes it included a grandmother or two. The station wagons were larger back then.
Glennice was born in Tennessee but truly loved Newport, RI and those who met her could hear her charming southern accent. She liked having her independence and her car provided this for her. One of her favorite things to do was to drive herself around Ocean Drive in her cherished silver Honda listening to Country and Western Songs with her diet Pepsi in hand. She was an active driver all the way up to May. This past April she passed a two hour driving test at R.I hospital and her instructor said she did exceptionally well. She was very proud of this accomplishment at her age 88.
She loved the Newport Naval Base and shopping at the Commissary and Exchange. For many years she was a Red Cross volunteer at the Newport Naval Base Hospital Pharmacy. She enjoyed waiting on the military staff, veterans and their families. She volunteered over 400 hours and received “Volunteer of the Year” award. This love for helping others came from her dedication to the Bible and God. She was an avid reader of the Bible and could quote scripture from all parts of the Bible.
Her most cherished part of her life was her family. She is survived by her daughter and son–in–law, Carol and Michael Saunders (Newport, RI), daughter Gay Gullison (Portsmouth RI), son and daughter-in-law Stan and Kelly Boyd (Portsmouth, RI), son Ken Newhouse (Newport, RI). Glennice has six grandchildren Shannah Spooner, Rick Boyd, Christine Gullison, Ed Gullison, Jasper Newhouse and Willow Newhouse; and five great grandchildren Melina Kyriakides Boyd, Timmy Spooner, Logan Gullison, Vanessa Kyriakides Boyd, and Ricky Kyriakides Boyd. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews from all over the US and her best friend Tom.
Glennice is preceded in death by her late husband Richard Newhouse Sr., daughter Gail Oliver, son Richard Newhouse Jr. and grandson David Boyd. Siblings, brother Harry Clayton(Athens, TN), brother John Reed Cate, (Carmel, CA), sister Catherine Machak (San Diego, CA), sister Mildred Winecoft (Asheville,N.C.), her twin sister Glenna Miller (Athens, TN), brother Earl Cate (Athens, TN), brother Burrell Cate(Hazlet, NJ), and Dolly Colaw (Pensacola, FL)
Special thanks to Newport Hospital and to all of the staff on the fourth floor for their kindness and excellent care they gave our mother. It takes a team and they are a great team.
