Obituary of Mary E. Garrett
Mary Elizabeth Garrett of Middletown passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at St Clare-Newport with her sons by her side. She was the daughter of John Joseph O’Brien and Mary (Morris) O’Brien.
Born and raised in Jamestown, RI. She attended St. Catherine’s Academy in Newport, graduating in 1951. When she was young she worked selling tickets for the Jamestown/Newport ferry. She attended Salve Regina for a couple of years before she met her husband Jack while he attended Officers Candidate School in Newport. Mary enjoyed the life of a Navy wife and the travels that stationed them in England, Spain, Norfolk, VA and finally in Newport where Jack retired after 23 years in the Navy. Mary received her master’s degree in Special Education from Salve Regina and enjoyed a long teaching career as a special education teacher in the Newport school system. Her passion for teaching special education was her strength and she took her students on many field trips and had them over to her house for cookouts.
Mary’s love of travel took her to many places and countries all over the world. Most of all she enjoyed her trips to Ireland where she traveled to many times, taking friends and family to visit her Irish roots. Mary loved playing tennis and played regularly with the same group of friends. She was an avid golfer and played in the Jamestown Gulls ladies Golf league in Jamestown. She enjoyed the beach and swimming. Mary liked being active in politics, was a former chair of the Middletown Democratic Committee and went to several Democratic National conventions.
Mary made many friends over the years and cherished her lifelong friendships. She was always willing to help a friend in need. Her love of family and friends were just some of her strongest values.
She is predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Cdr. John E. “Jack” Garrett and her brothers Martin O’Brien of Jamestown, RI and Jack O’Brien of Dennis, MA.
Survived by her sons John E. “Jay” Garrett and his wife Mary Beth of Newport, RI and Kevin P. Garrett and his wife Angela of Warwick, RI and by her beloved granddaughter Victoria Garrett, her sister in law Patricia O’Brien of Dennis, MA and her nieces Siobhan O’Brien of Warwick, RI and Maura O’Brien of Scituate, MA.
