Obituary of Barbara Jackson
Barbara (Steele) Jackson passed away with her daughters Laurie and Pam by her side on Friday, September 21, 2018 at Royal Middletown Nursing Facility. She was the wife of the late Paul F. Jackson. Born in Philadelphia, PA. on December 27, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Frank Steele and Juliet (Jubert) Steele. Barbara was a long time communicant of St. Lucy’s Church, where she taught CCD classes for many years. Barbara was a graduate of Rogers High School, class of 1948. She worked for many years at Newport Hospital, in the admitting office. In 1972, Barbara left the hospital to take a position at NUSC, now NUWC, as an administrative assistant. She worked at the naval base until her retirement in 1997.
Barbara loved spending time with her family, playing bingo and sharing lunches and trips to Newport Grand with her friends. She was a member of the Middletown Senior Center, where she enjoyed calling bingo. In her later years, Barbara grew to love watching the New England Patriots with her grandson James.
Barbara is survived by her children: Kathleen Ferrera (Ken) of Westboro, MA, Pamela Combellack (Richard) of Newport, RI, David Shaw (Tina) of Portsmouth, RI, Cindy Keith (Janet) of Minneapolis, MN, Laurie Wilkins (James) of Dartmouth, MA, Linda Wilson (Mark) of NC, and son-in-Law John Jones of Groton, CT. Her grandchildren: Lisa, Jeff, David, Meghan, Christopher, Andrea, Kristen and James Jr. and great-grandchildren: Emily, Mia, Ariana, Henry, Charlotte, Nora, Julia. Her sister and brother, Terry Flores and Bruce Steele and many nieces and nephews, as well as her life-long friend, Pat Sullivan.
Barbara was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Jones, brother, Frank Steele and sister, Carolyn Murphy.
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care given to Barbara by the staff at Royal Middletown Nursing Facility, where she spent her final year and a half of life. They would also like to thank the team at Visiting Nurse Home & Hospice for their care and compassion with Barbara over the past several years.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at St. Lucy’s Church, 909 W. Main Road, Middletown at 9:00 am. Burial will follow at RI Veterans Cemetery, 301 S. County Trail, Exeter, RI.
