Obituary of Helene Shroad
Helene (Helli) Shroad, 98, of Concord Drive, Middletown, RI, passed away on Monday, September 24, 2018, at Newport Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late John S. Shroad. Born in Vienna, Austria, on October 10, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Josef Homolka and Leopoldina Kubitza Homolka of Vienna, Austria. After completing high school Helli completed two years of business school in Austria. She performed administrative work for a pharmacy supply firm in Vienna. During round-the-clock bombing attacks on the city of Vienna, she performed air-raid warden duties. Her home suffered two direct hits. After the war, she lived in Upper Austria, where in 1945, on Christmas Eve she met her future husband at Midnight Mass. They married on July 1, 1948, in Vienna, and were devoted to each other for 59 years. They left Europe in the fall 1948 and settled in Branford, CT. She became a U.S. Citizen on November 11, 1954. Helli worked as a supervisor for 20 years at Bradley Laboratories which manufactured electronic components and then worked at Sirocco Screen-print Company for 16 years.
She is survived by her niece, Barbara Easterbrooks who lived with her and was her caretaker for many years. She also leaves her nephew, Charles V. Burns of Middletown, RI, along with a niece, Anne Burns of Bristol, RI and several great-nieces and nephews, Kim Lyons, Deb Reilly, Rory Burns, David Easterbrooks, Jay Lyons, Conor Burns and two great-great-nephews, Joseph and James Reilly. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law Agnes (Bunny) Burns and her husband, Charles V. Burns, Sr., her niece, Mary Alice Lyons and nephew David Lyons. Helli also leaves a dear friend, Margaret Sauvage of West Haven, CT
A special thank you to the case manager, doctors, nurses and CNAs of Newport Hospital, the Staff of the Transitional Care Unit of the Grand Islander and the Hospice Staff of the Visiting Nurse Home and Hospice for the wonderful care they gave to our special Aunt Helli.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 9:30 am at St. Joseph's Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport, RI. Burial with be at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Lane, Middletown, RI.
