Obituary of Hope Yordy

Hope Elizabeth (Granger) Yordy, 58, of Newport, RI, passed away on Monday October 29th, 2018. She left us far, far too soon, after a brave battle with stage iv lung cancer.

Hope was born in Newport, RI to Robert “Tip” Granger and Eleanor (Reyes) Granger on December 19th, 1959. She went to Middletown High School, and after high school attended Executive Secretarial School on Spring Street in Newport. She loved country music, football, baseball (Go Red Sox!), and her beloved rescue dog, Rocky.

From 1990-2011 she lived and worked in Danville, Pennsylvania with her former spouse, Jay Yordy, and their 3 children.

Hope was a modern superwoman - working full-time at Health South Rehabilitation, and oftentimes a second job as well, and yet still finding the time to support and take care of her children, who were her world, and their many activities from football, to theatre, marching band, gymnastics and beyond. She was a loving, nurturing, kind and generous soul who was always ready to give whatever she had to someone in need. If she didn’t have it, she would find it! Her home and dinner table were always open, and as one of her dear friends noted - “I never left her house hungry”. She made friends wherever she went and had a natural aptitude for making people feel loved, understood, and taken care of; especially through gift giving, and acts of service. Every year while she worked at Health South she organized a basket bingo, raising thousands of dollars for a Pennsylvania non-profit organization called National House of Hope. She also had a legendary sense of humor that she passed on to her 3 children and her granddaughter.

While she loved her work and friends in Pennsylvania, she always wished to one day return to Rhode Island. So, after her children were all grown she did just that. Back in Rhode Island she enjoyed rekindling old friendships, making new ones, and being close to her family. She took regular trips to Florida to spend time with and dote on her granddaughter Serena, and made many beautiful memories with her beloved companion Gerry DeCotis.

She is survived by her mother, Eleanor (Reyes) Granger, her brothers Rusty Granger, and Al Granger. Her children Nicole Benisch, Jaclyn (Yordy) Harris, and Casey Yordy. Her granddaughter, Serena Sanchez. She is also survived by former spouse, Jay Yordy, and family members Karen Granger, Jennifer Nicole Granger, Alice Granger, Robert J. Granger. Her beloved companion Gerry DeCotis, who was her rock throughout her brave 4 year battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her father Robert “Tip” Granger, her first husband, Stephen T. Benisch, and her dog Shorty Yordy.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, November 2, 2018 at St. Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown, RI at 10:30 am.  Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery, 465 Brown’s Lane, Middletown, RI.  Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
