Obituary of Robert C. Meyer

Robert Charles (Bob) Meyer, formerly of Tilley Avenue in Newport passed away on February 23, 2019 at Rhode Island Hospital after a brief illness.

Bob was born on March 3, 1930 in New York City, New York to the late Otto Carl Meyer and the late Helen Mildred Naylor.  Bob was the husband of the late Helen Mary (Lawless) Meyer.

Bob joined the Navy as a 17-year-old, eager to serve his country and see the world. His navy career took him all over the globe. He earned a Victory Medal for his service in Europe aboard the USS Hyman. Bob ended his naval career in Newport, where he was a military police officer. He used that training to become an auxiliary police officer in Newport after leaving the service.

It was in Newport that he met his wife (Helen) at a USO dance, which would begin a 45-year marriage. It would also begin his career in sales that spanned almost as long. He started in cemetery and real estate sales before finding his true calling in the automobile sales business at Barry Pontiac. Over the next 27 years at Barry, he won numerous “salesman of the year awards” from the dealership and accolades from the various automakers. He also won several trips where he and Helen would take much needed vacations. Bob was also a mentor to his son Ross, who also worked in automobile sales, and couldn’t have been prouder when Ross beat him out as salesman of the year on 2 occasions.

Bob was very active with the American Legion heading the local contingent in Newport for many years while Helen also got involved with the “Legion Ladies.” He was also a member of the All-Vets club and the Newport Sportsman Club.

Bob is survived by his sons, Richard Meyer of Portsmouth RI, Randall Meyer of Middletown RI, Ross Meyer of Newport RI, grandson Timothy Meyer of Middletown RI and granddaughter Stephanie Meyer of Lake Hills TX. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen (Lawless) Meyer, sons Robert Meyer Jr. and Russell Meyer, and grandson Robert Meyer II.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2019 from 4:00 – 7:00PM at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport. A reception will immediately follow at the Newport Sportsman Club, 110 JT Connell Highway in Newport.  Burial will be private.
