Denys Cousens

Obituary of Denys Cousens

Denys Cousens, 90, of Middletown, died at home on January 26, 2021 after a long illness.  He was the husband of Margery “Polly” Cousens for 65 years.

Denys was born on January 9, 1931 in Southampton, England.  He spent his childhood years in Oxfordshire and Suffolk, England.  At the young age of 14, he joined the Royal Navy as a boy seaman where he served for 14 years, the latter of which he worked in hydrographic survey in the Persian Gulf.  After leaving the Royal Navy, Denys worked for the Daimler Car Factory and then for the Jaguar Car Factory in Coventry, England.

Denys came to live and work in the United States in 1968 to be employed in the foreign automobile business.  He first worked for British Leyland Cars. After that, he worked for Jaguar Cars, and later for Ford Motor Company as a field service representative for the Northeast Region until his retirement in 1997.

Denys had many interests and hobbies, which included scuba diving, boating, fishing, farming, and collecting cars.  His love of animals eventually led him to purchase a farm of his own in Middletown where he had many animals including Scottish Highland cattle, horses, sheep, goats and various others in need of rescue.  Denys had many friends around town and enjoyed making his rounds to visit with them.

Besides his wife, Denys leaves two sons, Symon Cousens of Portsmouth and Timothy Cousens and his wife Holly (Sherman) Cousens of Portsmouth.  Denys also leaves behind four grandchildren, Cheyne Cousens, Benjamyn Cousens, Rebecca Cousens, and Abigail Cousens.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert Carrellas and Continuum Care Hospice for the caring services they provided to Denys during his illness.

A celebration of Denys’ life will be scheduled at a later date.  In honor of Denys’ life, memorial donations may be made in his name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, by visiting www.st.jude.org/donate.
