Obituary of Francis Dorsey Peck

Francis Dorsey Peck, 91, of Portsmouth, RI died peacefully June 11, 2021, at St. Clare-Newport after a short illness.

Born in Coleridge, Nebraska, Francis was the youngest of the 14 children of Eugene and Mary (Dresden) Peck.  He grew up on the family farm where he worked tirelessly from dawn to dusk.  At the age of 16, Frank joined the Navy.  A decorated veteran, he served his country for 20 years, spending much of his time at sea.  (He was often seen sporting his USS Iowa cap!) After retirement, Frank continued to work as a civilian in his specialty area: munitions.  He also enjoyed vacationing in Florida with his late wife, Jeanne; hunting with his nephews in Nebraska and just shooting the breeze at home with his good friend, Huck.

Frank was known for his intelligence and dry wit.  We will always remember his crazy sayings like “been doing this since Moby Dick was a minnow,” and his famous homegrown tomatoes, which were enjoyed by friends and neighbors for decades.

A humble man, Frank was quick to lend a hand to others and generous with charitable donations through his foundation.

Frank leaves an empty seat at the Elks Club where he religiously signed the books each week and chatted with his buddy, Coleen.  Friends, Louie, Buzz and Ed will miss him at their Cappy’s lunch hours.  Frank’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of many who loved him.

Francis is survived by his son, Jerry Cornman; daughters, Diana Smith, Joanie Campbell, and Connie Arets; stepdaughter, Trish Kelliher, sister, Ruby Hansen; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends.
