Obituary of Thomas F. Lyons

Thomas Francis Lyons,75, of Middletown, RI, passed away on July 5th, 2021, with his beloved wife of 54 years by his side.

Born in Syracuse, NY to Helen M (Saltus) and Francis T. Lyons in 1945 and grew up in Buffalo, NY. There he attended St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute and received his undergraduate from University of Buffalo. Tom then went on to earn his MBA from Bryant University.

Tom enlisted in the US Navy in 1963 where he did a tour in Vietnam.  He remained in active duty until 1973, eventually retiring as Captain from the US Naval Reserves after 28 years of Service.

Tom began his banking career in 1974 which he continued until retiring as President of Bank 5 in Fall River, MA in 2011. During this time, Tom served on several Boards such as the Newport Hospital and St. Anne’s Hospital as well as UMASS Dartmouth. Tom was also very generous with his time volunteering for many non-profits like The United Way and the Middletown Prevention Coalition.

Tom met the love of his life, Leslie (Andi) in Buffalo in 1966. They quickly fell in love and married in 1967. In addition to his wife, Tom also leaves behind his sons, Eric M. Lyons, his wife Jennifer, and M. Scott Lyons as well as 4 grandchildren and his beloved dog Bailey, all of Middletown. He was preceded in death by two sisters and is survived by a sister and brother. Tom had many other close family and friends from New York To California.

Tom loved football. He was a diehard Bills fan until moving to RI and raising his family Patriots fans. Patriots’ games were something he enjoyed doing with his Family, both watching and attending them. He was even lucky enough to be at the “Snow Bowl” Game and a Patriots Super Bowl.

Tom’s love of the water led him to the Navy, which led him to Newport, which led him to sailing. Sailing Narragansett Bay was a passion of his that he loved to share with family and friends. Many family vacations were spent sailing around New England coastal waters. Tom was most happy when he was on the water.

Tom will be missed by his family, friends, and his community dearly.

A private burial was held at St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.  A celebration of Tom’s life will be held at a later date to be announced.
