Obituary of Russel von Taby
Russel von Taby, aged 67, passed away unexpectedly on April 21, 2022 after suffering from recent challenging health issues. Born in Vienna, Austria, Russel was raised by his beloved grandfather, a diplomat whose extensive travel inspired Russel’s global interests and perspective at a young age. While he maintained a deep appreciation for international issues, one of his proudest moments in his life was becoming a naturalized US citizen.
Russel spent his youth in New York City where he graduated from the United Nations International School. He began his college education at Brown University before transferring to New York University to be closer to his grandfather who was dying of cancer. Russel worked for many years in commercial real estate in Manhattan. He also spent two extremely enjoyable years living and working in Rome where he would often tell people he tried to find a bad meal but never succeeded! When Russel moved to Rhode Island he worked in sales for a company providing high speed internet access for businesses.
In December 2012, Russel attended the Herreshoff Marine Museum Christmas party, and it changed his life as he met his beloved Alyce. It was love at first sight for both and they formed a deep friendship and enduring love. Together they enjoyed many evenings watching the sunsets over Newport Harbor, just the two of them or sharing the moments with friends.
He is survived by Alyce Wright of Newport, RI, and her sister Addie Wright of Warwick, RI, whom he regarded as his family.
He was a loyal friend, always there to lend a hand or to listen with empathy, a trustworthy confident who was filled with lovable eccentricity.
A celebration of his rich life will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Herreshoff Marine Museum, 1 Burnside St, Bristol, RI 02809.
