Obituary of Bertha Sullivan

Bertha T. "Pudge" Sullivan, 82, of Goodwin St., Newport, died Thursday, August 30, 2007, at her daughter's home in Middletown, RI. She was the wife of the late Jeremiah "Denny" Sullivan, retired Newport Police Chief. Born in Fall River, MA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha (Meadowcroft) Simpson. Pudge worked at the Garrettson Memorial Daycare Center in Newport. She was also a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary's Church, and a past President of the Lady's Hibernians of Newport. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and visiting King's Park. She is survived by her two sons Daniel J. Sullivan and his wife M. Susan Sullivan of Newport, Jeremiah Sullivan, Jr, and his wife Lisa Ann Sullivan of Portsmouth; two daughters, Maureen S. Wood and her husband W. Michael Wood of Newport, and Mary "Eileen" Sullivan of Middletown; grandchildren Lisa F. Sullivan, Michael J. Wood, K. Kelly Sullivan, Meghan A. Sullivan, Ryan T. Wood, Erin M. Sullivan, Patrick S. Wood, and Casey J. Sullivan; great-grandchildren Ally, Zach, and Wesley, and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Beatrice Coyne. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at 9:00am at St. Mary's Church, Newport. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 3, from 4:00-7:00pm in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, RI., 02840. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pudge's memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport & Bristol Counties, 1184 E. Main Rd., Portsmouth, RI, 02871, or to the Newport Police Relief Association, c/o Newport Police Dept., 120 Broadway, Newport, RI, 02840.
