Obituary of Jr. King

Donald A. King, Jr., 69 of Jamestown, RI passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his beloved family on Sunday December 16th, 2007. He was the devoted husband of Patricia (St. Denny) King. They were happily married for 46 years. Don was a loving father to son Donald King III, daughter Pamela King and husband Chris Pike, all of Jamestown. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Scime and husband Charles of Buffalo, NY and was much loved by extended family and friends. Born in Buffalo NY, Don was arguably one of the most prolific athletes to come out of the Western NY area. An accomplished All-American, he was one of the original Harvard Cup Hall of Fame inductees. He began his sports career at Lafayette High School, going on to play football for the US Marines. Continuing on to Syracuse University on a full athletic scholarship, he started in both football and basketball. In 1959, Don and his fellow "Orangeman" had an undefeated year. They went on to win the National Championship and Cotton Bowl. The 1959 team still holds 21 all time Syracuse records. His athletic talent led him on to play for the Detroit Lions in 1963 and he is included in author George Plimpton's famous book "Paper Lion". On the golf course, Don has recorded three holes in one and he also bowled a "300" game. Along with his love of his family, friends and sports, his love for animals was apparent in his devotion to his daughter's dogs, Jake and Murphy. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday December 21, 2007 at St. Mark Church, 60 Narragansett Avenue in Jamestown. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a cause near and dear to Don's heart, The Jeffrey Hanns Foundation, P.O. Box 425, Ransomville, NY 14131. (Each year, all proceeds are given to a charity of choice.)
