Obituary of Joseph LeMaire

Joseph Andre Honorius LeMaire was born on February 9, 1918 in Fall River, MA, the youngest son of Anthime and Eugenie LeMaire of St. Zephirin, Quebec, Canada. Mr. LeMaire spent his boyhood years in Fall River, MA. As a young man "Joe" studied in private, parochial school in Montreal, Canada, and later received two Bachelor Degrees from the University of Montreal: one in Mathematics, and the other in French. He started his teaching career at the Tilton Academy in New Hampshire. He also taught in upper state New York. He met Mary Alice Michaud at a teacher's conference in Boston. The two were married in June 1947. The LeMarires found two teaching positions in the same high school starting in 1948 at South Kingstown High School here in Rhode Island. Mr. LeMaire taught math and Mrs. LeMaire taught French and Latin. At South Kingstown High School Mr. LeMaire also coached baseball and basketball, and was able to bring the basketball team to play in the Boston Garden. In 1949, Conrad, their first son, was born. In 1955, Paul, their second child, was born in Wakefield. Other teaching opportunities were offered to the couple in Connecticut. They then moved to Bloomfield. In 1963, their daughter Monique was born. From June of 1963 to June of 1982, they resided in West Hartford. Mr. LeMarie taught at Sedgwick Junior High School, the Noah Webster School, and finished his career at Quirk Middle School in Hartford. During this time he studied at the University of Hartford and received his Masters in Education. Once "retired" to Newport in 1982, Joe then started a "second career" as a tutor for Newport and Middletown. From 1982 to the springtime of 2007 he tutored young children, teenagers, and adults in Math, French, Spanish, GED, SAT, and Prep. One of his life-long goals which he (just about) accomplished: to learn all the "Romance" languages: French, Spanish, Italian, Romanian, and Portuguese. For "fun" Mr. LeMaire was a member of Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club in Middletown and played golf at least two to three times a week. He was a very avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. Having lived a portion of his life in Canada he remained a Montreal Canadian fan!! Mr. and Mrs. LeMaire were married 59 years. Mrs. LeMaire passed away this spring of Alzheimer's Disease. Mr. LeMaire had numerous ailments this year, and ended moving into John Clarke Nursing Center in August. It was there that he passed away on December 22, at 1:20 am. He leaves his three children. The LeMaire Scholarship Fund has been set up to benefit a public school senior student in Rhode Island, who shows excellence in either the French language or Mathematics.
