Obituary of Barbara Burns

Barbara M. Burns, 90, of 5 Bowery St., Newport, RI. and more recently a resident of the St. Clare Home, 309 Spring St., Newport, died Thursday, April 12, 2007 at the home. Born in Newport on April 23, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Patrick "Spec" Burns and Mary Rose (Manning) Burns. She was also the step-daughter of the late Jane (Ring) Burns. Barbara was a graduate of Rogers High School, Class of 1934. Through the Newport Youth Community, she worked for the Recreation Dept., assisting with basketball and softball at the Community Center and the Aquidneck Hut. She attended the American Red Cross Aquatic School in Hanson, MA. She taught swimming and life saving at Kings Park. Also, Barbara assisted with the adult program at Rogers High School. She played softball and basketball for the Recreation Business Girls' Basketball team, often refereeing for basketball. During World War II, she worked at the Naval Torpedo Station in the supply department, from November 1941 to December 1946. After the War, Barbara worked in the personnel office at Fort Adams. She was a bookkeeper at the Nunes Motor Co. for 26 years, as well as Fourneir (now Newport Auto Center) for 3 years. She worked at the Breakers for 8 years retiring in 1985. She was an avid golfer at Green Valley Country Club for 20 years. She bowled on the Golden Girls Team for 5 years. She was a volunteer at St. Clare's Home for several years. She is survived by her brother William P. Burns and his wife Connie of Middletown, RI, a sister-in-law Marilyn E. Burns of Newport, RI, several nieces and nephews. Barbara was the sister of the late Gertrude M. Burns, Robert Burns, Mickey Burns, Francis Burns, and Margaret Yezvkevicz. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, April 16, 2007 at St. Mary's Church, Spring Street, Newport, RI at 9:00 am. Burial will be held at St. Columba's Cemetery, Brown's Lane, Middletown, RI. Visiting hours will be held Sunday, April 15, 2007, at the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
