Obituary of Clifford Myers

Clifford J. Myers, 82, Chief Petty Officer, US Navy, Ret., Beloved husband of Barbara (Kelondis) Myers, died peacefully Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at Newport Hospital with family by his side. Born August 25, 1925 in Troy, New York, Cliff was the son of the late Patrick and Marian (Shumway) Myers. Enlisting at 17, Cliff rose through the ranks to become Chief Petty Officer, serving as Boiler Tender Chief on Destroyers, and other Navy Ships. Cliff's Navy career spanned the World War II, Korean Conflict and Vietnam Eras. Following his retirement after nearly 27 years of service to his country, Cliff worked for the Newport Water Pollution Control Department. In his retirement, Cliff remained active in Military Activities, organizing and attending many Navy Ship Reunions. A loyal Rogers High Vikings Fan, he especially followed the Basketball teams. An avid golfer, Cliff was a member of the Green Valley Country Club and the Rhode Island Golf Association. In addition to his beloved wife of 59 years, Cliff is survived by 3 children, Bob Myers and his wife Sue of Irvington, Alabama, Michele Bowden and her husband Rich of Glastonbury, CT and Barbara O'Brien and her husband Larry of Fairfield, CT; 4 grandchildren, Timmy Hughes, Kate Bowden, and Rob and Dylan O'Brien; 3 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held Saturday, February 2, 2008 at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Lane, Middletown, R.I. at 10:00am. Visiting hours will be Friday, February 1, 2008 from 5:00 to 8:00pm in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Cliff's memory to the Newport Firefighters Pension Association, 21 West Marlborough St., Newport, RI 02840.
