Obituary of Monica Owens

Monica C. Owens, our dear Aunt Monnie, died peacefully with her family by her side on February 3, 2008. Monica was born on November 16, 1906 to William and Catherine Dunn Fleming and married Francis J. Owens a.k.a.: "Frankie" or "Skuppy" in 1942. Monica is predeceased by her parents and husband, as well as her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy "Dot" and John J. Flynn, her brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Millie Fleming, and her nephew and his wife, Barry and Pat Fleming. Monica leaves many family members to cherish the memory of her exceptional 101 years on this earth, including her nephews and their wives: John J. and Mary Taylor Flynn of Coronado, CA and William S. and Lynn Egan Flynn of Newport; as well as her five grandnieces and their families: Erin, Waldemar, Kevin, and Oliver Jantz of Munich, Germany; Chyleene, Jack, Meghan, Kelsey, and Cate O'Connor of Middletown, RI; Keely, Paul, Micaela, Caroline, and Keenan Connery of West Hartford, CT; Deirdre, Tim, Connor, Maggie, and Monica Shope of Chesapeake, VA; and Tara and Brian Frates of Santa Monica, CA. Monica is a graduate of Rogers High School and received her bachelor's degree in education from the Rhode Island Teachers' College. Monica taught in Newport County Public Schools. There was nothing Monica loved more than sharing a meal with dear friends and family. All who knew her were struck by her easy smile, kind demeanor and the grace with which she accepted life's challenges and enjoyed life's blessings. Monica will be missed terribly; Newport will never be the same without her. Monica's beautiful life will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, February 9, 2008, at 10:00 am, at St. Mary's Church, Spring St, Newport. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Browns Lane, Middletown. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, February 8, from 4:00-6:00pm at the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Church, PO Box 547, Newport, RI , 02840 or to the Visiting Nurse Services of RI and Bristol Counties, Hospice Program, PO Box 690, Portsmouth, RI, 02871.
