Obituary of Mary Maxwell

Mary Allerton Newhall Maxwell, 90, formerly of Philadelphia, PA, Worcester, MA and Jamestown, RI, died April 10, 2008 at the Grand Islander Health Center in Middletown, RI. Mrs. Maxwell, the widow of Dr. James Ackley Maxwell, was the second daughter of Daniel Allerton Newhall and Ellen Godfrey Newhall of Narberth, PA and Jamestown, RI, and the sister of the late Eleanor Newhall Churchman Weber. She attended Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT and then trained as a secretary, holding a number of jobs in New York and Washington before joining the Navy. During World War II Mrs. Maxwell served in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) division of the United States Navy in Washington, DC, attaining the rank of Yeoman First Class. There she met her future husband and moved with him to Worcester, MA, where Dr. Maxwell was Chair of the Economics Department at Clark University. She lived in Worcester for 45 years raising three children and taking an active role in her church and the community. She was a strong supporter of the League of Women Voters, helped to establish a volunteer bank, and assisted in end-of-life hospice care. Throughout her life she helped the needy through the Episcopal Church, and gained strength and support from her many clergy friends. Mrs. Maxwell enjoyed gardening, bridge and travel, visiting relatives and friends in Canada, Europe and various parts of the United States. She accompanied her husband on extended sabbatical trips to Australia and Lebanon, and attended numerous elder hostels in her older age. She delighted in her children and grandchildren and always welcomed their friends in her homes. Mrs. Maxwell is survived by her three children: Daniel Maxwell of Washington, DC, Anne Maxwell Livingston of Jamestown, RI, and Ellen Maxwell of Washington, DC. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Mary and Phoebe Livingston, Gustaf, Charles and Oscar Lonaeus, and two step-grandchildren, Julia and Catalina Preotu. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday April 19, 2008 at Trinity Church, Spring St, Newport, RI. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be sent to the Episcopal Charities Fund of Rhode Island, 275 North Main Street, Providence RI 02903.
