Obituary of Sarah Plumb

Sarah Barker Plumb of the John Clarke Nursing Center, formerly of 9 Pine Street, Newport, RI, a retired teacher, died, April 28, 2007. She was the wife of the late Ralph H. Plumb, Sr. They were married in Newport on May 24, 1942. She was born on "The Point" in Newport, on December 24, 1908, a daughter of the late Henry Barker and Emily Friend Barker. She was the fifth generation of her family to be born on The Point. Sarah was a 1927 graduate of Rogers High School. She also graduated from Rhode Island State College (now the University of Rhode Island), in 1931 where she was a charter member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. She also completed graduate work at Syracuse University. In the 1930's, she was a Home Service Director for the Newport Electric Corporation. She began her teaching career in 1946 in Washington, D.C. She also taught in St. Louis, MO, Prattsburg and Bradford, NY and Middlesex, NJ. She retired as a chairperson of the Home Economics Department at Middlesex High School, Middlesex, NJ. After retiring, she returned to Newport with Ralph and resided at 9 Pine Street. She was a serious doll collector and was President and Charter Member of the Ida Lewis Doll Club. Her dolls won many awards at doll shows throughout New England and New Jersey. She was also active in The Point Association and The Daughters of the American Revolution. Sarah was also an avid bridge player and belonged to many bridge clubs throughout her life. She was an avid golfer and member of Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club in her younger years. She leaves two sons: Jerry B. Plumb and Ralph H. Plumb, Jr., both of Portsmouth, RI. She also leaves five grandchildren, Jerry B. Plumb, Emily Plumb Rahilly, Jeffrey C. Plumb, Matthew A. Plumb, and Ralph H. Plumb, III. She also leaves two daughters-in-law Constance M. Plumb and Patricia S. Plumb. She was the sister of the late Carleton Pierce Barker and Emily Barker Huggins. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Child and Family Services of Newport County, 24 School Street, Newport, RI 02840.
