Obituary of Constance Krous

Constance M. Krous, 76, of Princeton St., Newport, passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2008, at the Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Wayne L. Krous. Born in Newport on October 6, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary L. (Jackowski) Pendergast. In addition to raising her seven children, throughout her life Connie was dedicated to working for peace and social justice. Connie implemented new programs of religious education at St. Augustin's Church, including teaching guitar to children for folk masses and preparing them for confirmation in CCD classes. In 1976 she was honored as "Woman of the Year" by the Christian Action Center for her work in programs designed to address social issues. Connie was coordinator of high school programs at St. Mark's Church in Jamestown from 1975 until 1984, designing activities and religious instruction for teens. In 1982 Connie was recognized as a Paraprofessional Minister of Religious Education by the Diocese of Providence. Connie never stopped. In her "retirement" years she launched a new career as a tax preparer and instructor for H&R Block. Connie was an avid gardener and loved to dance. She could often be found with long-time friends at Gooseberry Beach. She is survived by her children Stuart W. Krous of Portsmouth, Scott Krous and his wife Clare of Newport, Carol M. Sullivan and her husband Paul of Burrillville, Steven R. Krous and his wife Sarah of Portsmouth, Deborah A. Krous of Warren, Jo Anne Manuel and her husband David of Newport, Cathleen Nagelhout and her husband Greg of Naples, FL; 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; her brothers Thomas Pendergast of FL, William Pendergast of Newport; and her sisters Patricia Mitola of FL, and Sr. Mary Pendergast of Pawtucket. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2008, at 10:00am, at St. Augustin's Church, Carroll Ave, Newport. Burial private. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, August 15, from 4:00-7:00pm with a Celebration of Connie's Life from 6:00- 7:00pm in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, RI, 02840.
