Obituary of Lillian Brown

Lillian De Terra Brown, 100, died Sunday, August 17, 2008, at the Village House on Harrison Avenue in Newport. Mrs. Brown was the wife of the late Timothy J. "Kaiser" Brown of Newport. Born on March 7, 1908 on her parent's farm on Mitchell's Lane in Middletown, sight of the present Newport National Golf Course, she was a daughter of the late Marian and Joseph De Terra. She graduated from Rogers High School, Class of 1927 and attended Newport Hospital School of Nursing until her marriage to Timothy J. Brown. Mrs. Brown was a charter member of the Seaside Garden Club and was very active in gardening events during the 1940's, 50's, and 60's. She won many awards for her arrangements at the Horticultural Society. She was also an avid card player, having belonged to several bridge and card groups over the years. Lillian was a parishioner of St. Augustin's Church in Newport. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and John Gilbert of Huntington, NY; three granddaughters, Elizabeth Brosseau, Martha Reilly, and Marian Burton all of NY; one grandson, Michael Parsons of IL; four great-granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Marian Brown Parsons and sister of the late Mary V. Barrett, Edith Peckham, Laura Gagne, Helen Aylward, and Joseph De Terra. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at 10:00am, at St. Augustin's Church, Carroll Ave, Newport. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Ln, Middletown. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, August 19, from 4:00-7:00pm in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, RI, 02840.
