Obituary of Theodore Schmults

Theodore Conway Schmults, dearly loved husband of Lavinia Taylor Schmults, died on Saturday, August 30, 2008, at the Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long battle with Alzheimers disease. Dr. Schmults was 79. Dr. Schmults was the son of Ernest and Hazel Schmults. He was born in Warren, Rhode Island in the home of his grandfather, who was that city's first physician. Dr. Schmults graduated from Rogers High School in Newport and subsequently studied at Wesleyan University, the O. L. P. Seminary in Warwick, RI, and the Grand Seminaire St. Brieuc in France. He was ordained as a Catholic Priest in 1955, and practiced for 15 years. Later, he attended the University of Rhode Island from 1969 to 1975, earning a B.A, an M. A. and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. Subsequently, he became Clinical Coordinator of the Drug Treatment Program of the New Bedford Area Center for Human Services, a staff psychologist for the Human Resource Institute of Norton, MA, and after 1978, had a private practice in Clinical Psychology. He retired in 2001. Dr. and Mrs. Schmults enjoyed homes in Newport and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and traveled widely after Dr. Schmults retired. He was an avid gardener and environmentalist. Dr. Schmults is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lavinia Taylor Schmults and his sister, Margaret Jan Crandall of Palm City, Florida and Gloucester, MA Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 3rd at St. Columba's Chapel, 55 Vaucluse Avenue , Middletown, RI. Burial at St. Columba Chapel Cemetery. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund in Ted's memory for Nursing Education has been established.
