Obituary of Eugene O'Reilly

Eugene J. O'Reilly, 94, of 8 Oakwood Terrace, Newport, died at home on September 11th, 2008. He was the husband of Eileen O'Reilly. They would have been married 70 years on October 1st. Born in Norwalk, CT on August 5, 1914, he was the son of William and Alice (O'Connell) O'Reilly. He is survived by his children: J. Timothy O'Reilly of Portsmouth, RI, Sheila Young of Reading, MA, Eileen Daschbach of Lyme, NH, Brian O'Reilly of Newport RI, Kevin O'Reilly of San Rafael, CA, William O'Reilly of Middletown RI, Mary Dema of St. Croix, USVI, Alice O'Reilly of Newport RI and Elizabeth Lennon of Alta, UT, and their spouses, Dorothy O'Reilly, Joseph Daschbach, Barbara O'Reilly and John Dema. He was predeceased by two sons, Eugene John O'Reilly Jr, and Joseph O'Reilly, and his son-in-law Bill Lennon. He leaves twenty grandchildren: Trish Onofrio, John O'Reilly, Paul O'Reilly, Jamo O'Reilly, Liz Young, Christine Young, Kenny Young, Danny Young, Gene-O Young, Mary Assomouro, Ellen Daschbach, John Daschbach, Kevin O'Reilly, Ingrid O'Reilly, Sophie O'Reilly, Josie O'Reilly, Briana Dema, John Dema, Nola Ganem and Jacob Ganem; his fifteen great grandchildren are Jack Onofrio, Ben Onofrio, Lucas O'Reilly, Ella O'Reilly, Max O'Reilly, JT O'Reilly, Sammy Young, Katarina Young, Abby Young, Sarah Young, Katie Young, Michael Young, Ella Assamouro, Andrew Werling and AnnaBelle Werling. He also leaves a sister Marion Weldon of Bridgeport, CT. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 1935, he worked in New York for the Mack Truck Co. and RH Macy Co. He went to work for his father-in-law, J.T. O'Connell in 1938. He later owned the J.O. Neill Supply Co. in Fall River, MA and the Jamestown Hardware and Lumber Co. in Jamestown. He was US Naval officer in the Pacific during WW2. Among his many civic activities, he was President of Rotary Club, a chairman for the Newport Hospital Fund Drive and regional coordinator for several United Fund campaigns. He was a proud member of Alcohol Anonymous since 1981. An avid skier and golfer, he was also a boating enthusiast; he enjoyed his gardening and introducing his children to horseback riding. In his later years he especially enjoyed working on his son, Bill's, farm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at 10:00am, at St. Joseph's Church, Broadway, Newport, RI. A private family burial will follow at a later date. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, September 15, 2008, from 4:00-7:00pm in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, RI.
