Obituary of Christopher Hayes

Christopher Hayes, 56, of Newport died Friday October 3rd, 2008 after a long and courageous battle against cancer. He was in business with his brother Michael at the Michael Hayes Co on Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He was previously the manager of the Narragansett Clothing Store. Christopher was the husband of Connie Hayes and the father of Chip and Nory Hayes. Born in Newport, Christopher was the son of Marilyn Morrissey Hayes, and the late Patrick O'Neill Hayes Sr. He graduated from Rogers High School and the College of The Holy Cross. He had a keen interest in art, which led to his involvement with the Newport Art Museum where he served on the board and was a past secretary. He was a past treasurer of the Newport County Convention and Visitors Bureau. His presence will be sorely missed by the menswear industry especially the Boston Menswear Collection where he was known for his business acumen and the relationships that he developed over many years. Christopher was an active parishioner of St Mary's Church where he served on the parish council and as a Eucharistic Minister. Like his father before him, he had a passion for nature and in particular, ornithology. Christopher was also a member of the Newport Country Club, The Clambake Club, Newport Athletic Club, the Preservation Society of Newport County, The Redwood Library, and Hazard's Beach Club. The consummate gentleman, he had a wide circle of friends who loved and respected him for his great sense of humor and his genuine concern for all. He was the brother of Patrick O'Neill Hayes Jr, Michael J Hayes, Peter Hayes, and the late Ellen E Hayes. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 6, 2008 at 10:00am, at St. Mary's Church, Spring St., Newport. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Ln, Middletown. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, October 5, from 2:00-6:00pm in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, RI.
