Obituary of Francis Kane

Francis J. "Lefty" Kane, 80, died Sunday, May 13, 2007, of a long term illness. He was born in Freeport, Long Island, New York on February 26, 1927. He was a long time Newport Fifth Ward resident, and later spent his years with his spouse of 61 years raising his family in Middletown, RI. He was a son of the late Philip H. and Lucy Veronica (Fatzie) Kane. Lefty served in World War II after being drafted and later returned to his home town. He retired after working for over 45 years as a Line Foreman at the Newport Electric Corporation in Middletown, RI. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Utility Workers, Local 335. After retiring, he worked for the Newport Prescription Center. He later spent his time traveling with his spouse. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and watched his granddaughter in her younger years and volunteered when the need was there for her and any and all of her events, such as school field trips. Lefty was also a coach for Little League Baseball and in his youth was an amateur boxer. As a parishioner of St. Lucy's Church, he served as a collector for many years and was a member of the Third Degree, Middletown Knights of Columbus. Lefty is survived by his spouse Genevieve Veronica Kane and three children, Michael Myles Kane and his wife Shelia, Coleen Ivanoskos and her husband Richards Ivanoskos, and Michele "Mimi" Thurman and her husband Mitchell Thurman. He has four beautiful grandchildren, Michael Kane, Sean Kane, Christopher Kane, and Miss Brittany Amber Thurman. He has two great-granddaughters, Brooke Kane and Brianna Kane. He is also survived by his beloved brothers and sister, Bernard Kane, Larry Kane, Jack Kane and his dear sister Dottie Graham and was the brother of the late Philip H. Kane, Jr. He was a loving husband, exceptional father, grandfather, brother and true friend. A person of character, kindness, caring and love not only for his family and friends but all that he touched. He will be forever loved and missed by all that ever had the gift of knowing such an incredible human being. Visiting hours will be Wednesday, May 16, 2007 from 4:00pm to 7:00 pm at the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, R.I.. Mr. Kane's Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, May 17, 2007 at St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown, RI, at 10:00am. Burial will take place at Newport Memorial Park in Middletown, Rhode Island.
