Obituary of Jr. O'Connor

Dr. Charles A. O'Connor, Jr. 98 of Portsmouth, RI and Delray Beach, FL, distinguished educator and administrator , known locally and nationally for his commitment to excellence in education, died in his home on Sunday March 1 with his family by his side. Charles was born in Pawtucket on May 1, 1910, the son of Charles A. Sr and Anne (Hanaway) O'Connor, and brother of A. Frances O'Connor. He was a deeply devoted husband of the recently departed Mary C. McGinn, and is survived by Charles A. O'Connor III and Susan (Plaeger), Stephen J. and Gail,(Sullivan), David and Judy(Krotky), Mary C. 'Mimi' O'Connor, Anne Downey and Kevin, Kevin J. and Susan (Curtis), Christopher J. and Susan (Kaiser) six grand children & one great grandchild. Beloved grandparent of Chad, Bess, Caitlin, Meghan, Rachel, Sara, Claire , and Anaqi. Dr .O'Connor was a graduate of LaSalle Academy, 1927, received an A.B. Manhattan College, 1931, a Master's of Education from RI College, 1952 and an honorary doctorate of Education from Salve Regina University,1964. He was a teacher and principal in the Pawtucket School system and Superintendent of Schools in Warren, Newport and Providence .He served as an Assistant Regional Commissioner for US Office of Education from 1970-77 and finished his USOE career in 1980 at Salve Regina University in Newport, RI . Charles spent his life dedicated to serving others with kindness, dedication, and love. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 5th at 11 AM in St. Barnabas Church, Portsmouth RI. Calling hours will be held in the church on Thursday morning from 10-11am. In lieu of flowers, donations in Charles' memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 E. Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
