Obituary of Evelyn Smith

Evelyn M. "Sis" (Ring) Smith, of Middletown, RI, passed away in Newport, RI on March 18, 2009, while in the 84th year of her life. Mrs. Smith, born in 1925 was in the 62nd year of marriage to Truman E. Smith. They met at a ship's dance at the U.S. Naval Training Station, Newport, in August of 1943 while Evelyn was a Teletype operator for the U.S. Navy. Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Charles F. and Catherine (Farrell) Ring. Her brother James F. "Jim" Ring predeceased her in death. Mrs. Smith was surrounded by her loving family at the moment of her passing. Mrs. Smith was a member of Rogers High School, class of 1943, and was active as twice-president of St. Mary's Catholic Church Mothers' Club, serving also as president of the Trigon Club. She was also a past member of the Newport Horticultural Society. Mrs. Smith was noted for giving aid and comfort to elderly and indigent ladies and when the city was rocked by the Jazz Festival riots, put up 12 frightened girls in her home overnight. Following Evelyn's teletype experience, she was employed at the Newport Naval Supply Depot. Later she was custodian of classified material at Naval Underwater Systems Center. She devoted most of her life to raising her family, and enjoyed communing with her many lifelong friends. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband Truman, son Edward and wife M. Christie of Newport, and her daughters Nancy Damas and husband Stephen of Middletown, Paula Conway and husband Daniel of Middletown, and Claire Oakley and husband David of Newport. Mrs. Smith is survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Claire C. Hosch of Middletown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 23, 2009 at 9am in St. Mary's Church, Spring St., Newport. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Ln, Middletown. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, March 22, from 2-5pm in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Smith's name may be made to the St. Mary's Catholic Church Building Fund, PO Box 547, Newport, RI, 02840.
