Obituary of Roger Spooner

Roger M. Spooner, 80, died Thursday, May 24, 2007 in Newport after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Muriel J. Spooner. Born in Newport on December 15, 1926, he was a son of the late Edwin G. and Lillian (Hackford) Spooner. Roger was a graduate of De La Salle Academy, Class of 1944, where he played on the varsity football and basketball teams. He served in the United States Navy in both World War II and Korea, returning home to Newport. Roger worked as a plant supervisor at the former Coca Cola Bottling Company on Memorial Boulevard for twelve years. He also worked as an electrician for many years at NUWC retiring in 1994. He was a charter member of Green Valley Country Club, RI Golf Association and the Newport Lodge of Elks. He was the beloved father and grandfather of Beth Spooner-Willis of Portsmouth, Rhode Island and TR Willis of Orlando, Florida and his brother of George E. Spooner of Texas; he was predeceased by his wife Muriel J. Spooner and was the brother of the late Camilla Dupre. Roger spent his retirement years traveling to Australia, Fiji, the Azores and Florida. As well as playing golf, his favorite time was spent with his daughter and grandson. He was a loving father, grandfather and true friend. All those whose lives he touched have benefited from knowing him. He will be forever loved and missed by all that knew him. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 25, 2007, from 4:00- 7:00 pm at the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport. Roger's Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, May 26, 2007 at St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Rd, Middletown, R.I. at 10:00am. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Lane, Middletown, R.I. Donations may be made in Roger's memory to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
