Obituary of Michael DeCotis

Michael Paul DeCotis, 85, of 417 Forest Avenue, Middletown, died Friday, December 29, 2006, at the Newport Hospital. He was the husband of the late Angeline M. (Cinalli) DeCotis. Born in Newport on April 30th, 1921, he was a son of the late Michele P. and Loretta Bruno DeCotis. Mike was a life long barber, starting his business in his youth. His career started in the Fifth Ward section of Newport on the corners of Webster and Thames Streets. He expanded this business to Middletown, to the locations of Two Mile Corner ("LaFiesta"), and then the Aquidneck Shopping Center. He later opened "Hair I am" on Spring Street in Newport. Mike then went on to work with his son Peter, at "Pete's Barber Shop", on West Main Road, Middletown. Mike was a graduate of the former DeLaSalle Academy in Newport, Class of 1940, and served in the US Navy during World War II, from 1941 - 1945, on the Jeep Carrier "Altamaha" in the Pacific. He was a councilman for the Town of Middletown from 1969 - 1976. His memberships include the Knights of Columbus in Middletown, the Sons of Italy, the North End Club in Middletown, the Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club in Middletown, where he had been a member since 1950; Middletown Recreation Committee, Volunteered at the James L. Maher Center. He was also a member of the Middletown Merchants Association. He is survived by his children Christine L. Paquette of Portsmouth, Ann Marie Rosa and son-in-law Joseph C. Rosa of Middletown, Peter M. DeCotis of Portsmouth, Mary P. Hatam and son-in-law Reza Hatam of Delmont, PA, Michelle A. Bellezza and son-in-law Nicholas F. Bellezza of Hazelton, PA. His grandchildren Danielle L. Gibbons, Jared B. Paquette, Andre Paquette, Christopher J. Rosa, Jason P. Rosa, Nicholas Bellezza, Angela R. Bellezza, Ben L. Hatam, Maria M. Hatam, Joel R. DeCotis and Peter J. DeCotis and great grandchildren Jameson Gibbons, Colin Gibbons, Rayenah Aaliyah Hatam, Ava Lynn Rosa, and Brady Christian Paquette. His sisters Angelina (Ann) Martellino of Newport, Laura O'Brien of Newport, and Philomena LaPolla of Massapequa, New York. He was the brother of the late Henry DeCotis, Joseph DeCotis, Anthony DeCotis, and Alfred "Fred" DeCotis. A Mass and Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Road, in Middletown at 11:00 am. Burial will be at St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown, Rhode Island. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2007 in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, Rhode Island, from 4:00 - 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike's name to the Middletown Rescue Wagon Association, 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
