Obituary of Evelyn Fitzgerald

Evelyn F. Fitzgerald passed into eternal rest on January 11, 2007 at Newport Hospital with her children by her side. She was born in Newport, Rhode Island on September 12, 1916 to Robert L. Woodward and Margaret McCourt Woodward and resided in the "Fifth Ward" her entire life. She attended St. Mary's School and graduated from Rogers High School, Class of '34. She was predeceased by her husband Edward "Ted" Fitzgerald. Evelyn is survived by her daughters Carol A. Barbato, Barbara "Bobbie" F. Bell, Suzanne "Sue" M. Sullivan and son-in-law Lawrence "Larry" F. Sullivan and her son Edward "Ted" W. Fitzgerald, all of Newport, Rhode Island. She was the beloved "Nana Fitz" to Arthur R. Bell, Regina M. Chase, Michaela F. Barbato, Valerie A. Bell, Patrick E. Sullivan, Lisa A. Bell-Croy, Deborah A. Donovan, Nicholas Barbato, Jr., Timothy F. Sullivan, and Erin M. Goddard. She is also survived by 22 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild as well as her brother James L. Woodward of Austin, TX. In her earlier years Evelyn was active in Parent Teacher Organizations, Girl Scouts of America, Cub Scouts of America and the Boy's and Girl's Clubs of Newport County. She loved Gooseberry Beach and was one of its original members. Evelyn lived a vibrant life enjoying sports, cards, games, travel, knitting and most of all family and endearing friends. Evelyn is survived by her brother-in-law Timothy "Tim" Fitzgerald and wife Helen, her sister-in-law Mary F. Eddy and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the companion of the late Arthur "Watso" Westley. Evelyn wishes were for no services upon her death; family and friends will be joining together at a later date for a celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donation be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871, or the Fifth Ward Little League, 580 Thames Street, PMB 245, Newport, RI 02840. A memorial service will be held February 19, 2007, at St. Augustin's Church, Newport, 10:00 am. Funeral arrangements have been made by The O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport, Rhode Island.
