Obituary of Mary Louise Cochran Lynch

Mary Louise Cochran Lynch, 86, born August 17, 1915 died January 15, 2007, at Steere House in Providence where she had been a resident for the past 9 years. She was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Mary (Sullivan) Cochran. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years William G. Lynch, Assistant Director of R.I. Mental Health, Retardation and Hospitals and her brother, the Honorable Eugene F. Cochran R.I. Superior Court Judge. Mary and her husband were former residents of Cranston and Newport RI. Mary graduated from Brown University (Pembroke) in 1937 where she majored in English and History. Mrs. Lynch received her Master of Arts at Brown in the Department of Education in 1941. Her thesis considered the leisure time activity of adults. Prior to having children, she worked as a social worker and substitute teacher. She later attended URI for graduate work in Library Science, and subsequently worked as a Reference Librarian at Community College of RI. In that position, she achieved the rank of Assistant Professor, retiring in1980. Mary was a vibrant and enthusiastic person. She was active in the St. Paul's Women's Club for over 10 years, serving as their President from 1959 to 1960. She was a member of the Alumni Pembroke Women's Club and served as Class President from 1952-1962. She received an Outstanding Women of the Year Award from the Greater RI YWCA in 1987. She and her husband were longtime members of the RI Catholic Howard Guild. To enumerate Mrs. Lynch's positions is to ignore her grace and charity. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, a loyal and giving friend, and a dog lover. Mary's life exemplified the following life philosophy "I shall pass through this world but once; any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it. For I shall not pass this way again." She leaves two daughters, Constance Godin of Coventry, RI and Jean Lynch, Ph.D. of Kettering, OH, and 4 grandchildren, Colin Kelly, Jessica Halliday Hardie, Danielle Godin, and Brian Godin. A Mass and Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 19, 2007 at St. Augustin's Church, Carroll Avenue, Newport, RI, at 10:00 am. Burial St. Columba Cemetary, Middletown, RI. Visiting hours Thursday, January 18, 2007, in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to R.I.
