Obituary of Rita Mae Blake

Rita Mae Blake, 85, a longtime resident of 183 Gibbs Avenue in Newport died at the Heatherwood Nursing Home on May 28, 2007. Rita was born in Providence, the daughter of the late Joseph G. and Julia E. (Smith) Blake and moved with her family to Newport at an early age. Ms. Blake was employed by the United States Civil Service as a secretary at the Naval Base in Newport for approximately twenty years. Upon her retirement from the Civil Service she worked with Ade Bethune at St. Leo's League Religious Shop for 28 years. She was an avid tennis player and official at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the Pop Flack courts of the Newport Recreation Department where she provided voluntary tennis instruction to many young tennis players. Rita was a member of the Preservation Society of Newport County, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Audubon Society, and the National Association of Retired Employees. Rita is survived by her first cousins, Paul W. McCarthy of Portsmouth, R.I. and Peter McCarthy of Washington, D.C. Her funeral will be A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church, Spring St., Newport at 9:00 am on Wednesday, May 30, 2007. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown, R.I.
