Obituary of Evelyn Carroll

Evelyn C. (Chasse) Carroll, age 95 of Newport, RI passed away on Thursday at Saint Elizabeth Home in Bristol. She was the beloved wife of the late Patrick F. Carroll. Born in Bridgewater, MA on October 16, 1911 she was the daughter of the late Clement and Ellen (Kelliher) Chasse. Evelyn and her husband Patrick Francis Carroll moved to Newport in 1937 when he got a job teaching in Middletown. Mrs. Carroll was an exemplary teacher at area schools including Sullivan, Carey, Lenthal, Cranston-Calvert, Sheffield, Coggeshall and Underwood . She devoted 38 years to teaching the children of Newport and especially loved being the Principal of Underwood School toward the end of her "official" career. Retirement in 1977 gave her the chance to pursue her second passion: literacy and promoting a love of reading and life-long learning in children. She was a past President of V.I.N.E. (Volunteers in Newport Education), a member of the Literacy Volunteers of Newport, the Retired Teachers Association, Friends of the Newport Library, The Newport Hospital Auxiliary, Concerned Citizens Against Casino Gambling, the Governor's Taskforce Against Child Abuse, Friends of the Waterfront, Friends of Braga Park, and served as a volunteer mentor at both Sheffield School and Thompson Jr. High School. Mrs. Carroll also worked as a volunteer at the bookstore of the Newport Public Library. She was honored on May 3, 1999 by the Newport Daily News with a Community Service Award celebrating "inspirational and unselfish service in helping to make this a better place to live." A voracious reader, Mrs. Carroll truly enjoyed a good mystery. While a resident at Blenheim, she spent many happy hours reading to children from the Bright Star Pre-School. Mrs. Carroll loved stylish clothes and a fabulous hat to complete the outfit. Mrs. Carroll was an avid traveler and visited more than 20 countries on six continents, inspiring her grandson Sean Carroll "to hopefully make one more trip than Mimi during his lifetime." Her trip diaries and travelogues rivaled Frommers Guides.
