Obituary of Nancy Cavangh

Nancy Miller Cavanagh passed away at her home in Newport, RI on February 6, 2007. Mrs. Cavanagh, 89, was born in New York City, the daughter of William W. Miller and Nannette Campbell Miller. She attended the Chapin School in New York City and Miss Porters School in Farmington, CT. Her father was a founder of the New York law firm of Hornblower, Miller & Potter (now Willkie, Farr & Gallagher). Her late husband, Edward F. Cavanagh Jr., was a lawyer and former New York City Fire Commissioner and Deputy Mayor. Mrs. Cavanagh was as often to be found comforting victims of fires, as assisting at Gracie Mansion for visiting dignitaries. Widely traveled and an avid horsewoman, she was known for her optimistic nature and legions of friends, especially in Newport. Mrs. Cavanagh was a Dame of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in addition to being a longtime member of the Spouting Rock Beach Association and the Clambake Club. She was the beloved mother of the late Edward F. Cavanagh III (Pat), Nannette C. Herrick (George) of Newport, R. Anthony Cavanagh of Newport, and Mae C. Slagsvol (Steve) of Pleasant Valley, NY. She was also the loving grandmother of John H. I. Brokaw Jr. (Jenny), Christina B. Bassett (Todd), Henry W. Siegel IV, Justin A. Kreizel (Rachel), Christopher H. Cavanagh (Katherine), Walter M. Cavanagh, Samantha C. Cavanagh and Alexander R. Cavanagh. Calling hours will be held Sunday, February 11, 2007, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Augustin's Church, Carroll Avenue, Newport, RI on Monday, February 12, 2007 at 11 a.m. Burial will be on Tuesday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, New York. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Newport Hospital Foundation, 11 Friendship Street, Newport, RI 02840.
